How are teams formed?
MYSA basketball league is a recreational sport program with the focus on learning and having fun. Below is our draft procedures for our basketball league, exceptions may be made on a case by case basis. We attempt to allow for requests for coaches and friends as much as possible but this is not guaranteed. These requests must be sent to massillonyouthbasketball@gmail.com prior to the last day of registration.
Massillon Youth Basketball Draft Procedures
All Leagues
- Players will stay on the same team within the same league.
- Examples:
- 1st Graders will remain on the same team for two years, then be re-drafted when entering the 3rd grade league.
- 3rd graders will remain on the same team for their 3rd and 4th grade season, then be re-drafted in the 5th grade.
- 5th graders will remain on the same team for their 5th and 6th grade season.
- Examples:
**Exceptions to the above policy, these exceptions will be decided by directors ONLY**
- Not enough players to field the same amount of teams as previous years.
- Addition of more teams.
- Brother or sister moving into the same league and need to be together
- Parent request for a different coach
- Some other uncontrollable circumstance
1st – 2nd Grade League
- Coaches will add players to their roster from the registrations. There will be no evaluations.
- All players on that team the previous year will remain on that team.
- Our goal in this league is for participants to be introduced to the game of basketball, there are no records kept. Therefore, we are not necessarily concerned with where kids are playing or who they are playing for.
- Since this is an introductory league we want kids to play and participate with their friends. We want them to really enjoy the game of basketball and it is our belief that they will enjoy the game more with their peers.
- Max number per teams will 10.
3rd – 6th Grade Leagues
- All players on that team the previous year will remain on that team, regardless of coaches.
- Coaches kid will be placed on their team. Max of three coaches per team with players. ** Exception when more than two coaches are needed due to their job/work situations**
- The team with the least amount of players will select first in the draft, the draft continues in this manner. If we have more than one team with the same amount of players, we will draw the coaches name at random.
- Teams that already have players on them will lose picks in the following rounds: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9.
- Example: Team 1 has 4 players already on their roster, they will pick in the 2, 4, 6, & 8 rounds to even out their team. They will not have picks in the 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9 rounds.
- **Exception: A new team with one or two players on it will receive a pick in the first round**
- Blind Draft:
- Any player that does not show up to evaluations will be placed in the “Blind Draft”.
- Blind Draft picks will be completed first and will work from the bottom up, thus the last pick in the draft will receive the first blind draft, the 2nd to last pick will receive the next and so on until all blind draft participants have been selected.
- When selecting blind draft participants their draft number will be placed in a hat and coaches will draw that number out of the hat.
- Max number of players per team will be 9, our goal is 8
- Players may be added to your roster after the draft if there is room available in the league, again we will not exceed 9 players on a roster for any reason.
**Exceptions to the above policies may be needed based on a case by case basis and will only be decided by league directors**
NOTE: You are registering your child to play basketball, we do not issue refunds if your child is not on the team they or you wish to be on.
AS IN ALL SPORTS TEAMS WILL NOT BE EVEN, THERE WILL BE TEAMS/PLAYERS THAT ARE BETTER OR NOT AS GOOD AS OTHER TEAMS/PLAYERS. THAT IS THE REALITY OF SPORTS.
